Case Study: Ketty Mupakwa
Ketty Mupakwa worked in food manufacturing before she took her first NEBOSH qualifications and made the transition to working in health, safety and environmental management full-time. She studied for not one but two NEBOSH Diplomas simultaneously and her hard work not only paid off but also made her a Best Candidate in 2023. Since then she has been a panellist at the NEBOSH Online Conference and currently works for a NEBOSH Learning Partner as a Student Support Tutor.
1) Can you tell us about your previous professional experience and what led you to pursue a career in health and safety and environmental management?
My professional journey began in the food manufacturing industry, where I developed a passion for ensuring workplace safety and environmental sustainability. While working as a SHEQ Manager I realised the profound impact that health, safety and environmental practices have on business success and employee wellbeing. This realisation, coupled with my dedication to creating safer and healthier work environments and a sustainable environment, led me to take NEBOSH qualifications. Achieving the Best Candidate Award for the NEBOSH International Diploma in Environmental Management in 2023 validated my commitment and opened the door to my transition into health, safety and environmental management full time.
2) What was the experience of graduating as a double diplomate and Best Candidate like?
It was incredibly fulfilling and humbling to graduate as a double diplomate and Best Candidate for the NEBOSH International Diploma in Environmental Management. Graduating for two diplomas in one day was an unforgettable experience. I attended the morning graduation ceremony for Occupational Health and Safety and the afternoon ceremony for Environmental Management. Being recognised and honoured throughout the day as a VIP, surrounded by NEBOSH executives, Learning Partner directors and officials, was a moment of immense pride and inspiration.
3) You have completed your NEBOSH International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety and NEBOSH International Diploma in Environmental Management.
• Why did you take these qualifications, and what made you choose NEBOSH? What made you decide to take two Diplomas simultaneously?
I chose NEBOSH for its global recognition and reputation for excellence. My decision to pursue both diplomas simultaneously stemmed from a desire to deepen my expertise in both occupational health and safety and environmental management. These disciplines complement each other and are critical for sustainable business practices.
• Did you enjoy the courses? What was the experience like?
I thoroughly enjoyed the courses, even though balancing two demanding programmes simultaneously was challenging. Taking four closed-book exams in one week and submitting two practical assignments on the same day taught me resilience, time management and precision.
• How did these qualifications benefit you?
These qualifications equipped me with the in-depth knowledge and practical skills to implement effective SHE systems, and they positioned me as a trusted SHE professional. They also opened up opportunities to serve as a NEBOSH Student Support Tutor, allowing me to mentor others pursuing similar goals.
4) What’s next for you in terms of your professional development?
I plan to continue expanding my expertise by pursuing the NEBOSH Master’s degree in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management. This will deepen my strategic understanding and enable me to lead global initiatives that integrate safety, health, and sustainability seamlessly.
5) What made you choose a NEBOSH Master's degree, and what value do you think it will add for you professionally?
The NEBOSH Master's degree aligns perfectly with my goal to become a thought leader in SHE management. This advanced qualification will strengthen my ability to address complex challenges, contribute to policy development, and drive impactful changes within organisations worldwide.
6) What do you enjoy most about being a SHE professional?
The most rewarding aspect is knowing that my work directly contributes to protecting lives, preserving the environment and enhancing operational efficiency. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to make a tangible difference, which is incredibly fulfilling.
7) Can you share your experience of participating as a panellist at the 2023 NEBOSH Online Conference?
I had the privilege of participating as a panellist at the NEBOSH Online Conference 2023. This event, which attracted thousands of global attendees, provided an excellent platform for me to share my expertise and insights on the topic: "Don't forget the 'E'! Developing and delivering an environmental strategy in a multi-function role". It was an incredible experience to discuss strategies and practical guidance alongside other industry experts and to contribute to a broader conversation about integrating environmental management into multi-functional roles. This opportunity further solidified my commitment to advancing health, safety, and environmental excellence globally.
8) Looking back on your career to date, what achievements are you most proud of?
I am most proud of earning the NEBOSH Best Candidate Award for the International Diploma in Environmental Management and securing my current role as a NEBOSH Student Support Tutor. Additionally, I take great pride in having achieved the Best Student Award for Environmental Health nationally in Zimbabwe - my home country. These milestones reflect my dedication to academic excellence, professional growth, and my passion for making a difference.
9) What would your advice be to anyone at the start of their SHE career?

Remember, the journey may be demanding, but the rewards are immeasurable when you know you're making workplaces safer and healthier and contributing to a more sustainable environment.
