In health and safety, even one ‘yes’ or ‘no’ can change everything
Case Study: Aswin Raj
NEBOSH Diplomate Aswin Raj is an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist working for IMAR Trading and Contracting WLL in Qatar. In this insightful interview, he shares his thoughts on a range of topics, including how to ensure a successful transition between sectors and how artificial intelligence should be used within our profession.

Did you always know you wanted to build your career in this profession, and how did you make it a reality?
I chose to study Engineering at university, but it was during my final year, when I started thinking seriously about my career. Health and Safety emerged as my preferred path. I started to see it as a future orientated profession with real relevance, strong prospects, and the potential to work internationally. It was around this time that I first heard of NEBOSH.
After speaking with senior HSE professionals and seeing how they tackled real site challenges, my view of the profession became more profound. I came to understand that health and safety is not simply a route to opportunities abroad, but a credible, demanding profession that requires knowledge, discipline, responsibility, and sound judgement. I decided, this was the career I wanted, and I made it happen step by step through practical experience and NEBOSH study. Today, I see health and safety as a way of thinking, a form of self discipline, and a profession that helps create safer workplaces and a better society.
You passed your first NEBOSH qualification, the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, in 2017. Why did you choose it?
I wanted a qualification with long term value, not something shaped by temporary trends. Many people were choosing different courses at the time, but I was looking for a path that was internationally respected and genuinely relevant. What made NEBOSH stand out to me was its strong global recognition, professional credibility, and rigorous assessment approach. I believed it would give me a solid foundation for building a sustainable international career.
I was already working when I chose it, which made the decision more meaningful. I have always felt that every workplace needs dedicated attention to health and safety, because everyone deserves a safe environment to work in. Looking back, choosing NEBOSH was a turning point. It gave me a clear professional identity and the respect that comes with being part of a profession that protects people and improves workplaces.
How did achieving the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety help your career?
It helped me in two important ways:
1) Achieving this qualification provided a strong foundation in health and safety, which supported me in my work. My studies improved my approach to hazard identification, risk assessment, site safety, communication, inspections, and investigations. Most importantly, they helped me develop a proactive mindset, which is essential in health and safety.
2) It became a gateway to building my international career. Many job adverts listed this qualification as a requirement, so achieving it meant I could apply with confidence. It also strengthened my proficiency. I could see a clear difference in how I presented myself during interviews, and it enhanced my CV as well.
Overall, the NEBOSH International General Certificate strengthened my knowledge and confidence and supported my career progression by making international opportunities a realistic possibility.
In 2023 you completed the NEBOSH International Diploma once again choosing to study with NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner, Ensign Safety Academy and Consultants PVT Ltd. Can you tell us why you chose this qualification and what benefits you gained from this success?
The NEBOSH International General Certificate gave me the foundation to work in the Health and Safety field. However by 2023, I wanted to develop a deeper level of knowledge and understanding to prepare for senior responsibilities and this is why I decided to pursue the NEBOSH International Diploma.
As Health and Safety professionals, we deal with new work practices, new machinery, changing environments, and wider challenges like climate conditions and other emerging risks every day. I wanted to continue learning so I remained up to date and had the confidence to respond effectively to different situations and guide others.
I chose Ensign Safety Academy and Consultants PVT Ltd. again because, having studied with them previously, I was confident I would receive excellent support from their qualified tutors and wider team throughout the learning process. This was particularly important to me as I was balancing my studies alongside site responsibilities.
Completing the Diploma gave me more than a qualification. It provided deeper subject knowledge, stronger confidence, and greater professional credibility. It improved the way I apply my skills on site, support workers proactively, and communicate with management. It also brought increased professional respect, as the Diploma reflects both commitment and a higher level of competence within the Health and Safety profession.
What has been the best thing you have learned through your NEBOSH studies?
The best thing I have learned through my NEBOSH studies is that learning in health and safety has no limit, because improving safety means continuously growing with new risks, new knowledge, and new responsibilities.
You have worked for IMAR Trading and Contracting WLL in Qatar since 2022. Can you tell us about the company and its health and safety ethos?
IMAR Group operates across multiple sectors in different parts of the world. I work for IMAR Trading and Contracting WLL, where my experience has mainly been in the fit out sector in Qatar. The company views health and safety as an integral part of project delivery and worker wellbeing, rather than simply a compliance requirement. Management is supportive, and health, safety & workforce welfare are taken seriously.
This commitment is reflected in day to day practice through inductions, toolbox talks, inspections, audits, permit to work systems, risk assessments, and active management involvement. In my view, one of the company’s strongest features is the expectation that quality and safety go hand in hand.
Please can you tell us about your role and responsibilities as an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist with the company?
My role is shaped by project requirements, and one of the strengths I value most in my company is the trust management places in me to take on a range of responsibilities. This has allowed me to work in multiple roles depending on project needs, which has helped me develop both professionally and technically.
In practice, my responsibilities include supporting safe project execution through site monitoring, inspections, risk assessments, permit to work coordination, safety briefings, and follow up on corrective actions. I also work closely with supervisors, workers, subcontractors, and management to ensure health and safety requirements are clearly understood and effectively implemented on site.
An important part of my role is adapting to different project environments, whether large scale or small scale, and working with a wide range of people and organisations. This exposure has strengthened my knowledge, communication skills, and practical understanding of how to manage health and safety in varied situations.
Overall, my main responsibility is to help ensure work is carried out safely, compliance requirements are maintained, and workers are supported through a proactive & practical approach to health and safety.
You have worked in several sectors including oil and gas, construction and manufacturing. Do you have any tips for switching between sectors?
I view switching between industries as a learning opportunity rather than a challenge. I have never wanted to limit myself to one field, as each sector offers different exposure, risk profiles, and ways of understanding work & safety. I have not spent extended periods in every sector, so I would not claim complete knowledge of each one. However, the experiences I have gained have helped me develop a broader, more practical understanding that supports me across different roles and environments.
The core purpose of health and safety remains the same in every sector, although its application varies by industry, environment, and legal framework. When moving between sectors, you should therefore learn about these things before acting, take the time to understand processes, identify hazards, study relevant standards & legal requirements, and listen to those with experience.
I recommend staying humble, remaining open to learning, and approaching change with positivity, because multi-sector exposure builds wider knowledge, stronger adaptability, and a more mature professional mindset.
In your opinion what qualities do you believe define a successful health and safety professional?
A successful health and safety professional is defined by a combination of qualities:
- Knowledge - Keeps us up to date
- Experience - Helps us apply it
- Good judgement - Enables us to make the right decisions to protect people.
One of the most important qualities is knowing how to approach each situation appropriately, because in health and safety even a single “Yes” or “No” can change everything. Decisions must be made carefully and responsibly.
A good HSE professional should be both firm and supportive, enforcing standards while also guiding, educating, and communicating clearly, particularly where language barriers exist. Mindset is equally important: being proactive, practical, fair, calm under pressure, and always willing to learn. One mistake to avoid is ego; listening to others and learning with humility are just as important as giving direction.
Overall, a successful health and safety professional combines knowledge, experience, communication, good judgement, and humility to protect people and improve the workplace.
How do you see AI influencing the skills required of future health and safety professionals, and what do you see as its main benefits and limitations?
AI can support us in many ways, including - faster access to information, better analysis, and improved learning tools. However, health and safety professionals should not become fully dependent on it. The challenges in our field are real, practical, and often site-specific, hence human judgement, experience, and responsibility will always remain essential. I believe AI should be used as a support tool, not as a replacement for professional thinking and decision-making.
What do you enjoy most about being a health and safety professional?
It has to be the opportunity to protect people, particularly in a world that is constantly changing. As industries grow, infrastructure expands, and new challenges emerge, protecting human life becomes increasingly important. Knowing that this responsibility is part of my role gives real meaning to my work.
I also value the fact that this profession is not limited to rules and procedures alone. It is about responsibility, awareness, sound judgement, and making practical decisions that can prevent harm before it happens. For me, the sense of purpose that comes with this is the most meaningful and rewarding aspect of working in health and safety.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to build their career in health and safety?
The first thing I would say is that health and safety is not a career that offers shortcuts or quick success. It is a profession where responsibilities and expectations are constantly evolving. To be successful, you need the right attitude: stay humble and disciplined, keep learning, gain practical experience, learn to communicate effectively and listen to those with experience in the field.
Success does not automatically follow completing a qualification, as the job market is competitive. However, strong qualifications from a recognised institution such as NEBOSH, combined with hard work and persistence, will support your progression.
