For me, safety is the guardian angel of companies!

Case Study: André Luiz José Monteiro

André Luiz José Monteiro has worked in the oil and gas sector in Brazil his entire professional life, gaining experience in both oil refineries and fuel distribution.

For the past fifteen years, he has worked for one of the main companies in the sector in Brazil, Supergasbras, which distributes liquefied petroleum gas to residential and commercial consumers throughout the country. The company directly employs more than 4,000 workers, distributes 34.4 million cylinders monthly to 5570 municipalities and has 700 trucks of its own fleet.

“When I joined Supergasbras, I initially worked with quality and supplies before entering the operational area. Five years ago, I was fortunate enough to be invited to be the head of the job safety area, where I always wanted to be. André told us, “I find it very rewarding to take care of our people, find ways to improve our processes and share good practices. The fundamental objective of my work is to prevent accidents and take care of what is important, people and the company. For me, safety is the guardian angel of companies.

“Today in Brazil there is a death by accident at work every 3 hours and 40 minutes, which shows that we all must do more to protect workers. I am very proud that Supergasbras takes this responsibility very seriously and is investing in safety training for its workforce. I saw for myself the difference it can make in energizing people and giving them the knowledge they need to play their part.

“We have units with more than 2000 days without accidents at work. This is the result of the efforts of our employees and the company's management to make safety a value within the company.”  André explained.

As part of its commitment to safety training, Supergasbras encourages all its leaders, from all areas of the company, to obtain the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health.

“Supergasbras is part of the global SHV Energy group, and my boss is based in the Netherlands. I had never heard of NEBOSH until he suggested that we take the course, and I'm glad that he did it, as we have gained a lot from qualifying!

“Training has been very valuable for us. The way the content was presented by the NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner iNLS Solutions trainer was very important. We were encouraged to discuss topics and it was very helpful to hear the opinions of colleagues from other areas of the company, including sales, operations and supplies. Participation in the course brought many opportunities for Supergasbras, which generated improvements. It has changed the way we think about safety and is helping us achieve our biggest goal: zero accident...always."

It is very good to know that training and qualifications have been so beneficial for André and his colleagues. André is now convinced that NEBOSH can help raise safety standards more widely in Brazil.

“I saw for myself the value that a company can gain by investing in health and safety training and NEBOSH qualifications specifically. I believe that NEBOSH can help transform the safety culture in Brazil, motivating qualified holders to share the knowledge and experience we have acquired. I suppose my hope is that NEBOSH will help Brazil to win more safety angels that will change things for the better here."
