A career shaped by learning, dedication and purpose
Case Study: Ali Akbar
Ali Akbar is a Project HSE Engineer with Arabian Industries in Abu Dhabi. Without a clear plan to enter the profession, Ali built his career through determination, continuous learning, and practical experience. NEBOSH qualifications played a key role in shaping his knowledge, confidence, and career progression, ultimately supporting his move into high-risk international environments where safety leadership is critical.

Did you always know you wanted to build your career in this profession, and how did you make it a reality?
I didn’t start with a clear plan to work in health and safety. My first role in the profession was as a Safety and Security Officer in a hotel, where I developed an early sense of responsibility for people’s safety. Over time, I found myself enjoying the safety aspect of my role more and began to recognise the impact and satisfaction that a career in health and safety could offer. This became my focus, and I worked to build my competence through a combination of practical experience and academic study. I took international qualifications and gained experience across a range of sectors. Through hard work and dedication, I progressed step by step to where I am today, a Project Health and Safety Engineer in the oil and gas sector.
You passed your first NEBOSH qualification, the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, in 2018.
- Why did you choose it? - I chose to study the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety in 2018 because I felt this globally recognised qualification would strengthen my foundation and support my professional growth in health and safety.
- How did achieving this qualification help your career? -It was a turning point. It improved my understanding of risk management and safety systems, boosted my confidence, and opened doors to international opportunities, especially in high-risk industries.
You have gone on to complete three other NEBOSH qualifications. Can you share your thoughts on each of them:
- NEBOSH HSE Introduction to Incident Investigation: This qualification taught me to move away from blaming individuals and instead focus on identifying root causes to help prevent future incidents occurring.
- NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management: This qualification was very important for my role in oil and gas. It enhanced my understanding of major hazards and the importance of managing high-risk operations safely.
- NEBOSH Level 6 International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals: Achieving this qualification was a major milestone in my career. It strengthened my strategic thinking, leadership skills, and understanding of safety culture, preparing me for senior roles.
In one sentence, what is the best thing you learned from NEBOSH studies?
Safety is not just about compliance—it is about understanding risks, influencing behaviour, and protecting lives.
You are now studying for a master's so clearly you have a real passion for learning. Do you have any advice for other safety professionals who are trying to balance work and studies?
Stay disciplined, manage your time well, and connect your studies to real work experiences. Consistency and a clear goal make it possible, even with a busy schedule.
