Case Study: Haider Jawdat

Haider Jawdat is HSE consultant for SICIM SPA Iraq branch, a world leading provider of engineering, procurement, and construction services to the oil and gas industry.

The company design and install pipelines and plants that address the most diverse and complex logistical and environmental conditions to ensure hydrocarbons can be transported, processed, and distributed safely. Haider, who specialises in lift planning and risk assessment, joined the company in 2019.

Haider told us: “I enjoy working at SICIM SPA Iraq branch because the company genuinely cares about its workers all over the world and consider us to be valuable assets. Safeguarding its people and minimising environmental impact are not targets; they are essential prerequisites for everything we do.”

A key part of SICIM’s approach is to ensure that its workforce has the knowledge and experience required to do their jobs safely. When Haider applied for his role, he impressed because of his relevant experience and the fact that he had already successfully completed the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

“Passing this qualification helped me in so many ways. I found it built up my confidence and broadened my health and safety knowledge and understanding which I continue to use every day.” explained Haider.

As SICIM has laid 13,000 kilometres of pipelines, it is easy to understand why they need lifting specialists like Haider in their team. Haider and his colleagues spend their time assessing risks and planning projects to ensure that pipework is lifted into place safely. They have the company’s fleet of over 5,500 specialist vehicles including pipe layers, cranes, excavators and boring machines at their disposal to achieve this.

“I really enjoy my role and find it so rewarding. I help to ensure we meet our customers’ needs whilst operating safely. My opinion along with everyone else’s matter and I know I add value to the overall business and help keep my colleagues safe and well.” Haider told us.

Haider aims to take the next turn in his career and has ensured he continues his personal development both at work and through study. Knowing that taking such courses will have a great impact Haider has completed both the NEBOSH HSE Health and Safety Leadership qualification and the NEBOSH HSE Introduction to Incident Investigation.

“I really enjoyed both courses and find they are already helping me in my role. The leadership qualification gave me pointers to enhance my communication and influencing skills so I can better convey safety messages to colleagues. The incident investigation course provided a valuable reminder of how and why we need to investigate effectively so that lessons are learned.”  explained Haider.

Haider studied all three NEBOSH qualifications via e-learning with NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner, RRC International: “The resources RRC provide are excellent and are easily accessible online. This enabled me to study effectively around my work commitments which was perfect for me.”

Haider is now studying the NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management, and after that he aspires to complete the NEBOSH International Diploma: “I have really enjoyed my NEBOSH studies and would highly recommend them to others. They have helped me develop and grow and are so relevant in the workplace. I view them as the benchmark for the health and safety profession and believe they have been key to my own career progression and job security.”
