Making Progress Can Count Too

Case Study: Aaron Smith - The Salvation Army

Making progress towards a professional level qualification can make all the difference when looking to take a step up the career ladder, as Aaron Smith recently discovered.

Although Aaron, 28, enjoyed his previous role as an Environmental Health Officer for a local authority, he is naturally ambitious and so began looking for a position with broader responsibilities.

Aaron’s original qualification was a BSc Hons in Public Health and Environmental Health. However he chose to take the NEBOSH diploma as it was more specialised, relevant and well recognised.

“When searching for jobs one of the top requirements I saw again and again was the NEBOSH Diploma, so I decided I would start studying for it,” explained Aaron.

Soon after a health and safety vacancy arose within the Salvation Army, a position that Aaron found both intriguing and appealing. He applied, and even though he hadn’t fully completed his Diploma, the simple fact he was studying for it was enough to satisfy his new employers.

“They were impressed because they said it showed I was dedicated to health and safety as a profession,” he told us.

The Salvation Army was even more impressed when Aaron gained the highest mark for all sittings of Unit A of the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety in 2012/13. In fact, his result was the best anyone had achieved since the four unit Diploma was introduced in 2006.

“My line manager in particular was thrilled I was named the top candidate and hopes this will help to further raise the profile of health and safety within our organisation.”

Aaron, who has now fully completed his Diploma, was delighted to attend the NEBOSH Graduation Ceremony with his family, where he also received an award for his Unit A exam result. “It was great opportunity to thank those around me for supporting me during my studies, to my wife especially,” he said.

Aaron added he feels confident and very satisfied in his role as Regional Safe Mission Adviser with the Salvation Army. The work is varied and rewarding, particularly as he often sees first hand the charitable support his employers offer to vulnerable people in society.

Congratulations Aaron and keep up the good work.
