New entry-level environmental qualification hitting the spot

A brand new qualification from NEBOSH is already proving to be an excellent way for companies to improve employee awareness of environmental impacts and risk controls.

The NEBOSH Environmental Awareness at Work qualification is suitable for all Industry Sectors and has been specifically designed to improve environmental awareness among the general workforce.

Research shows that employers are finding the introductory level qualification useful in supporting their Environmental Management Systems (EMS), such as ISO 14001.

Recently, food ingredients manufacturer ADM Cocoa UK was one of the first to put a number of its workforce through a course leading to the NEBOSH Environmental Awareness at Work qualification. At its plant near Liverpool, ADM Cocoa UK has already developed an effective Environmental Management System, which in 2013 led to ISO 14001 Certification.

ADM Cocoa UK recognises that people are hugely important when it comes to delivering continuous environmental improvement.

“Often, it’s when employees understand environmental impacts and what they can do about them, that the biggest changes occur,” explained the plant’s HS&E Coordinator Greg McCannon.

Altogether, nine employees ranging from food hygienists to production staff took part in the ADM Cocoa UK course run by Environmental Monitoring Solutions. All passed, including Food Safety Manager Anna Ollier.

Anna, who has a degree in Agri-Food, Marketing and Business Studies, told us: “It’s an ideal first step. I think it’s given everyone a good understanding of how everything fits together and you can easily relate it to your role. It certainly improves general awareness and can be taken by employees at all levels.”

HS&E Coordinator Greg McCannon added: “NEBOSH sits right at the top of the pile for qualifications. They are really good quality. The idea behind the NEBOSH Environmental Awareness at Work qualification was to get people to understand their impacts, particularly with energy usage, our packaging materials, waste and so on.

“We’ve immediately seen that our employees are being more proactive. They’re also coming forward with ideas of their own. Altogether, it’s proving very positive and given everyone a more structured approach.”

The 1 day pilot qualification is assessed through multiple choice and provides a progression route on to the more established NEBOSH Certificate and Diploma level environmental management qualifications.
