Two Social Purpose projects move to phase two

Wednesday, 27 May 2026

Two initiatives supported through our Social Purpose Programme are now progressing into phase two, following the successful completion of their initial research stages

SOWSHE-A: Women's PPE

Through our Social Purpose Programme, we funded SOWSHE-A to investigate the suitability of women's PPE, with a particular focus on heat-related risks in non-climate controlled workplaces across Africa. With phase one now complete, the project is moving into its next stage.

Phase two will expand on earlier research by combining:

  • Field evidence
  • PPE testing
  • Stakeholder engagement

This approach will help with practical interventions, advocacy and guidance aimed at reducing heat-related risks and strengthening the adoption of safer, more inclusive PPE standards for women.

Together, NEBOSH and SOWSHE-A remain committed to addressing occupational heat stress and improving PPE inclusivity for women working in challenging environments across Africa.

SOM: Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining

The second project with Society of Occupational Medicine (SOM) also moves into phase two after a successful first phase.

The initiative focuses on protecting the health, safety and livelihoods of people working in artisanal and small-scale mining. Phase two will build on research conducted across Brazil, Colombia, Uganda and Zimbabwe, using these insights to shape:

  • Advocacy
  • Education
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • In-country data collection

The goal is to reduce risks and support the adoption of internationally recognised safety standards within artisanal and small-scale mining communities.
