“My NEBOSH qualification played a key role in helping me secure this position. It demonstrated my understanding of health and safety principles and my ability to manage workplace risks effectively”

Case Study: Rana Zargham

Rana Zargham enrolled onto the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety at just 19 years old. We caught up with him to find out what inspired him to study health and safety at such a young age.

Zargham, tell me about your education.

I completed my secondary school education at Sideeq Public School, Pakistan. This level of education is broadly equivalent to GCSEs in the United Kingdom.

Following this, I continued my studies at the Punjab Group of Colleges, one of the most well-known and reputable educational institutions in Pakistan. I completed my Higher Secondary education (FSc) there, which is comparable to A-Level education in the UK. During this period, I developed strong academic discipline, time management skills, and an understanding of structured learning, which later supported my professional studies.

What inspired you to pursue a career in health and safety straight after finishing school?

After completing my higher secondary education, I faced a common challenge experienced by many young graduates—identifying a career path that was both meaningful and aligned with my interests. While exploring various options, I came across the field of occupational health and safety through social media and online career platforms. The idea of a profession dedicated to protecting lives, preventing workplace accidents, and ensuring safe working environments immediately captured my attention.

I began researching the health and safety profession in depth and quickly became captivated by its practical impact, global relevance, and ethical responsibility. I was particularly drawn to how safety professionals contribute to organisational success by managing risks, ensuring legal compliance, and promoting a positive safety culture.

Why did you choose a NEBOSH qualification?

Recognising the international credibility of NEBOSH qualifications, I made the decision to pursue this career path. At the age of 19, I took on the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety and successfully completed it. This qualification provided me with a strong foundation in hazard identification, risk assessment, accident investigation, health and safety legislation, and safety management systems.

Completing this NEBOSH qualification at a young age helped me develop professional maturity, responsibility, and a clear sense of direction in my career. Building on this foundation, and driven by my commitment to continuous professional development, I have now progressed on to NEBOSH Level 6 International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals, which I am currently undertaking. This advanced qualification is further strengthening my strategic understanding of health and safety management, leadership responsibilities, and the development of effective safety systems within organisations.

Choosing to study NEBOSH qualification at a young age reflects my long-term commitment to the health and safety profession, my proactive approach to learning, and my desire to meet international standards. I am dedicated to continuing my professional growth and contributing positively to workplace safety, both locally and internationally.

Can you tell me about your current role?

I am currently working at Sardar Ilyaas Alam Construction Company as a Safety Officer on a federal government construction project, namely Danish Public School, which is part of a Prime Minister’s development initiative.

In my role, I am responsible for supporting and monitoring health and safety practices on site. My duties include carrying out site inspections, identifying hazards, assisting with risk assessments, ensuring compliance with safety procedures, supporting toolbox talks, and promoting safe working practices among workers and supervisors. Working on a federal government project requires strict adherence to safety standards, documentation, and compliance, which has strengthened my professional discipline and attention to detail.

How has NEBOSH helped you in your current role?

My NEBOSH qualification played a key role in helping me secure this position. It demonstrated my understanding of health and safety principles and my ability to manage workplace risks effectively. On a practical level, NEBOSH has helped me apply structured risk assessment, hazard control, and proactive safety management on site. It has also improved my confidence in communicating safety requirements and contributing to a positive safety culture.

Can you give any advice for young people who are hoping to start a career in health and safety?

Young people who want to build a career in health and safety should start by gaining a strong foundation qualification such as NEBOSH, as it provides essential knowledge of workplace hazards, risk assessment, and legal responsibilities.

Alongside qualifications, it is important to gain practical experience on-site, as health and safety is best understood through real working environments. Developing good communication skills is also vital, because safety officers must confidently advise workers and management and encourage safe behaviour. Staying up to date with safety laws, standards, and best practices through continuous learning is essential for career growth. Finally, having a positive attitude, attention to detail, and a genuine concern for people’s wellbeing will help young professionals succeed in this field.
