NEBOSH - Gives you an edge over others

Case Study: Anurag Kshattriya - Total

Born in India, 42 year old Anurag Kshattriya now works in the United Arab Emirates for energy company Total. He is QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental) Manager for their Supply & Marketing operation in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

It’s a big responsibility, as he not only manages QHSE in the manufacturing, storage and distribution areas in the region, but also various Total projects in the Middle East.

Like many in health and safety management, Anurag began his career in an entirely different, but very relevant field. He originally qualified as an engineer and his first role was as a maintenance engineer in a manufacturing plant. As he became involved in a wider variety of projects and operations his knowledge of health and safety grew, and so he decided on a change of career path in the direction of health, safety, environmental and quality management. Immediately he recognised that just as for his engineering roles, a formal qualification would be “very helpful” for his future.

First of all he took the UK focused NEBOSH National General Certificate, as in his own words he was aware this was “a very widely accepted and respected qualification.” He studied hard and passed without difficulty.

Anurag felt confident that his years of practical experience would mean he was capable of taking on the professional level NEBOSH Diploma. Because his work was based outside of the UK, he chose the newer international version of the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, which he studied with provider TWI Middle East. Again, he drew on his own experience, put in a great deal of study time and was successful.

Asked if he would recommend that others study for a NEBOSH qualification, Anurag’s answer is a resounding “yes”!

He says NEBOSH “gives you an edge” over other unqualified HSE Managers not just because of the name associated with the qualification, but importantly because it provides “greater knowledge and a broader view through formal education.”

Quite a recommendation! Anurag added that his Diploma has given him recognition and will also act as a useful stepping stone towards gaining a Masters level qualification.

This could prove very important for his future, which he hopes will one day be in the area of consultancy work. Good luck Anurag. We wish you well.
