A career built on protecting people: My path through the NEBOSH Framework

Case Study: Akram Ali Khan

Akram Ali Khan is based in Saudi Arabia, where he works as an HSE Engineer for L&T Energy Hydrocarbon Engineering Limited. In this interview, he shares why he chose to build a career in health and safety, how NEBOSH qualifications have supported his professional progression, what he enjoys most about the field, and the advice he would give to others with similar aspirations.

You seem to have decided very early on that Health and Safety is the career for you. What attracted you to the profession?

When I entered the world of work after completing a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, I wanted a role that would allow me to make a real and positive difference. After seeing how effective safety management can prevent injuries and save lives, I felt that a career in health and safety would give me the opportunity to achieve this.

I was always conscious of the impact that workplace incidents have—not only on workers but also on their families—and being able to make a difference in this area is what initially drew me to the profession. From a very early stage in my career, I recognised that health and safety is more than just a job; for me, it is a calling.

The first NEBOSH qualification you completed was the Health and Safety at Work Award. Why did you choose it, and how did your studies help you?

When I chose to take the NEBOSH Health and Safety at Work Award in 2019, I wanted to formalise my practical experience with a recognised qualification. I was keen to build a strong foundation in health and safety principles, and I felt this course would help me do that. Studying for the Award gave me a clear understanding of key areas such as risk assessment, hazard control and the importance of developing a strong safety culture. It strengthened my confidence and provided me much greater clarity in my role.

You went on to pass the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, in 2023:

  • Why did you choose this qualification in particular? I decided to pursue the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety because it is internationally recognised and aligned with global standards. Since I was working on international projects, I wanted a qualification that would strengthen my professional credibility and expand my knowledge in a structured, comprehensive way.

  • How has achieving the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety helped you? This qualification significantly strengthened my understanding of international best practices, legal frameworks and health and safety management systems. It enhanced my ability to conduct detailed risk assessments, lead safety initiatives and communicate effectively with management and workers from diverse backgrounds.

In 2025 you completed the NEBOSH Level 6 International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals. Can you tell us:

  • Why you chose this Diploma level qualification?  I chose this Diploma because I wanted to progress to a more strategic level in health and safety management. I was keen to deepen my knowledge of leadership, organisational culture and advanced risk management so that I could contribute more effectively at a senior level.
  • How achieving this qualification will benefit you?  Achieving this qualification has strengthened my analytical and leadership skills. It has prepared me to contribute effectively at a managerial level, support business decisions with a strong safety perspective and promote continuous improvement within organisations.

What was the best thing you learned through your NEBOSH studies?
I would say the key thing I have learned through my NEBOSH studies is that effective health and safety is not only about rules and procedures; it is also about leadership, communication and positively influencing people.

During your career you have moved between countries. Do you have any tips to help others to manage change well?
My advice to others is to stay open‑minded, respect cultural differences and continually update their knowledge. Adaptability, patience and a willingness to learn are key to managing change successfully.

You are now based in Saudi Arabia and work for L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering Limited. Can you tell us about the company and its health and safety ethos?
L&T Energy Hydrocarbon is a subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro Limited. The company provides integrated "design to build" engineering, procurement, construction and project management solutions for both offshore and onshore hydrocarbon projects. It supports the entire value chain—refining, oil and gas, petrochemicals and fertilisers—across India, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Africa.
Safety is treated as a core value within the organisation. It promotes a strong safety culture through strict compliance with client requirements and a commitment to continuous monitoring and improvement of HSE performance.

As an HSE Engineer for the organisation, what are your key responsibilities?
My key responsibilities include implementing safety policies, conducting risk assessments, ensuring compliance with permit to work systems, delivering toolbox talks, monitoring site activities, investigating incidents and promoting safety awareness among workers and supervisors. I work closely with different teams to ensure that all activities are carried out safely, efficiently and in line with organisational requirements.

What do you enjoy most about being a health and safety professional?
For me, it’s the fact that this profession gives me the opportunity to protect lives and create a safe working environment. It is very satisfying to know that my work helps prevent accidents and contributes to improving overall workplace standards.

What advice would you give someone who wants to build a career in the health and safety profession?
My advice would be to focus on strong fundamentals, gain practical site experience and pursue recognised qualifications such as NEBOSH. Continuous learning, good communication skills and integrity are also essential for long term success in this profession.
