NEBOSH offers three separate Master of Science (MSc) degrees in partnership with the University of Hull:

These postgraduate degrees are designed for those who wish to extend their academic achievement beyond the level of a NEBOSH Diploma qualification, in order to further advance their professional careers.

The Masters programmes consist of online distance-learning taught modules on advanced topics relating to health, safety and environmental management and research dissertations that will be relevant to your own place of work.

Who is it for?

Individuals

The MSc degrees NEBOSH offered in partnership with the University of Hull are for health, safety and environmental professionals. They build directly upon the high-level knowledge provided by our Diploma qualifications. Allowing you to expand your knowledge and expertise in a particular area, of health, safety or environmental practice, or who wish to pursue doctoral studies.

These qualifications are ideal for Health, Safety and Environment professionals looking for a flexible way to continue their academic studies while working.

Employers

NEBOSH MSc degrees take the academic status of our Diploma holders one stage further. They support the skills and methods required to deliver strategic excellence in occupational health, safety and environmental practice.

Employing professionals at this level of academic achievement emphasises how important you regard health, safety and environmental quality and compliance within your organisation.


What you will learn

What do the courses cover?

In the first year of this two year course, you will cover the following subjects regardless of which MSc option you choose:

  • Research Methods
  • Literature Review
  • Designing Research Projects

Specific to MSc in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management, you will also study:

  • Advanced Health, Safety and Environmental Risk Management
  • Corporate Social Responsibility in Health, Safety and Environmental Management

Specific to MSc in Occupational Health and Safety Management, you will also study:

  • Advanced Health and Safety Risk Management
  • Corporate Social Responsibility in Health and Safety Management

Specific to MSc in Environmental Management, you will also study:

  • Environmental Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Ecological Services and Environmental Economics

In year 2, you will select one optional module from a choice of:

  • Disaster and Emergency Management (option for all)
  • Safety Case Production and Assessment (option for all)
  • Mental Health at Work (option for MSc in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management, MSc in Occupational Health and Safety Management)
  • Flood Risk Management (option for MSc in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management, MSc in Environmental Management)

You will also complete an MSc Research Dissertation.

How is the qualification assessed?

For each subject area studied in the first year, you will complete an essay assignment of between 2,000 and 6,000 words.

For the second year optional module of your choice, you will complete an essay assignment of 3,000 words, plus case studies or a workplace based assignment of a further 3,000 words.

The MSc Research Dissertation assessment consists of:

  • An online viva voce assessment (45 mins)
  • An online presentation (15 mins)
  • A written Research Dissertation of 12,000 words including a literature review of 2,500 words

Entry requirements and exemptions

Entry requirements

NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety/ NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety/NEBOSH Diploma in Environmental Management or equivalent either a Science or Management-based Bachelor’s degree (2:2) or equivalent (with suitable health and safety and/or environmental content). 

Learners will also need to be employed within an industrial or commercial environment in order to carry-out and provide evidence for their Research Dissertation in a workplace setting.

Exemptions

There are currently no exemptions available in relation to our NEBOSH Masters programmes.


Where to study

Programmes leading to our Masters degrees are delivered exclusively by the University of Hull through distance learning.

There is one intake of learners each year which is in September. No enrolment with NEBOSH is required.

What does it cost and how long does it take?

Over the two years we recommend studying for a total of 1,800 hours. This includes 600 hours of recommended study for the MSc Research Dissertation, including minimum of 6 hours of project supervision face to face or via video call.

There will also be at least one face to face verification visit from University of Hull, British Council or similar.

Graduation

Successful students are invited to attend the NEBOSH Graduation and Awards Ceremony in the summer following successful completion of their Masters degree. 

The 2020 Graduation and Awards Ceremony has been postponed due to the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. We have been in touch with our venue Symphony Hall in Birmingham and have rescheduled the ceremony for 28 June 2021.

Additional Masters Programmes

A number of universities offer MSc programs which accept the NEBOSH Diplomas as a full or partial entry requirement. Some MSc courses may require additional qualifications/expertise, such as a degree, further significant work experience or expect students to complete specific modules e.g. in environmental management.
